Smith & Williamson has been appointed the ‘official tax adviser to TEAMORIGIN', the sailing team which will represent Britain's bid for the next America's Cup.
We will provide corporate and VAT advice to TEAMORIGIN, as well as payroll services and personal tax advice to senior ex pats. Most of this work will be provided on a value-in-kind basis, in return for being recognised as an official sponsor.
The America's Cup is the most famous yachting regatta in the world, and dates back to 1851. It involves a best-of-nine series of match racing (essentially, a duel between two boats) and the sport attracts top sailors and yacht designers from all over the world. The boats will be over 90' long and have a crew made up of 21 people.
TEAMORIGIN will bid to take part in the 33rd and 34th editions of the event, due to take place in 2009 and 2011 - and Smith & Williamson's involvement is expected to cover both events. We are the team's first official sponsor.
The opportunity came about because Sir Keith Mills, who is the Team Principal of Teamorigin is a long-standing corporate finance client. Sir Keith was Chief Executive of the team which bid to host the 2012 London Olympics and devised Air Miles and the loyalty card, Nectar.
