Ian joined Smith & Williamson in October 2006 and has over 25 years experience advising and providing solutions to a wide variety of clients on tax matters. He was formerly a Tax Partner with PKF and spent several years working in the Corporate Services sector.

His recent assignments have included in depth involvement with Employee Benefit Trusts (EBTs) for smaller Companies, including instructing Tax Counsel, implementing the arrangements, liaising closely with Trustees and then defending the Trusts from attack by HMRC. He has instructed Tax Counsel on a forthcoming case on EBTs and the discovery process.

Ian assists a number of wealthy individuals, successful SMEs and often helps smaller firms of Accountants and Lawyers who need specialist tax advice for their clients. He has wide experience of dealing with all taxation situations arising from arrival in and departure from the UK and has dealt extensively with all areas of the law of domicile. He has wide experience assisting in the set up of appropriate off shore Trusts and Companies.

Ian held a public appointment as a General Commissioner for Income Taxes in London and North Sussex, until the abolition of that office in April 2009. He has made regular radio and television appearances on tax issues and has been quoted in both local and national press. For two years he provided a regular tax spot on the Money Channel.
