John works in our London and Birmingham offices.

Forensic Services

John leads the forensic technology unit within Smith & Williamson’s Forensic Services team. He specialises in forensic computer investigations, including

  • Document management and e-discovery
  • corporate litigation support
  • fraud and money laundering investigations

John has experience in both law enforcement and the private sector, having initially worked in computer forensics whilst he was a Detective in the fraud unit of the Cheshire Constabulary before moving to a major UK information management company and then a Big 4 accountancy firm.

He has carried out sensitive and cross border investigations and has worked on cases for the National Crime Squad (now SOCA), Department of Trade and Industry and DEFRA, as well as for the Metropolitan and Provincial police forces. He has acted as an independent expert and also provided complex forensic computing evidence to the Magistrates, Crown and High Courts.

John is a member of the First Forensic Forum (F3) of forensic computing practitioners and the Society for Computers and Law.

Competition Services

John has significant experience of assisting companies with collating evidence for competition authorities including helping to respond to Section 26 Notices of the Competition Act 1998.  Recent case work includes: assisting a large manufacturer in compiling electronic evidence sought by the UK Competition Commission; and providing a report to the Office of Fair Trading on the completeness of electronic data sets identified by the respondent to a Section 26 Notice as being of potential relevance to the investigation.
