Richard Mannion

Richard heads our national tax function at Smith & Williamson, which involves responsibility for disseminating tax information across the group and ensuring quality control. Richard has over 30 years experience in the accountancy profession, specialising in the tax problems of individuals and family businesses.

Richard is a former president of the Chartered Institute of Taxation and is currently a member of the institute’s technical committee and chairman of the small business sub-committee. He is a founder member of the working together project, whereby professional bodies work with HM Revenue & Customs to identify and resolve procedural problems within the tax system.

Richard passed the institute of taxation examination in 1970 and became a fellow in 1978. In 1980 he qualified as a chartered accountant and became a partner in Solomon Hare in 1981. In May 2005 the merger of Solomon Hare and Smith & Williamson took place and in October 2006 Richard became head of national tax.

Richard also lectures on tax issues and is a regular contributor to professional magazines and the media. He has appeared on TV and radio.

Richard has acted as expert witness in a number of professional indemnity insurance claims against accountants and tax advisers.  He gave expert evidence on behalf of an accountancy firm in the High Court in 2008.

In May 2006 he won the Lexis Nexis Butterworths’ taxation lifetime achievement award.
