Paul joined Smith & Williamson in 1996, initially managing the Chippenham office of Solomon Hare, moving to the Bristol office seven years later. He has progressed to Associate Director within the corporate tax team and currently looks after a large and varied portfolio of compliance clients around the Midlands and the South.
Having initially joined the Inland Revenue in 1980, Paul set up one of HMRC’s first Black Economy units before moving into practice and returning to Bristol in 1987. He was involved in the corporate and personal tax affairs of a range of clients at a local firm where he was also heavily involved in computerising their tax department as a fore-runner to the introduction of self-assessment before moving to Smith & Williamson.
Paul has considerable experience of advising on Employment Taxes and Construction Industry Scheme matters in addition to his work on general corporate tax compliance and consultancy matters. He has a particular interest in the revamped CIS scheme introduced in April 2007, the requirements for obtaining or maintaining Gross Payment Status and experience of successful appeals to HMRC together with lecturing and writing articles on the subject.
Paul speaks regularly at Smith & Williamson seminars in our Birmingham and Bristol offices, our annual Budget presentations and also contributes articles to both local and construction industry press.
He is a member of the (CIOT) and a Fellow of the Association of Tax Technicians (ATT Fellow) having been one of the early members of that organisation.
